The Farm

Tenuta Castello is in Desana in the Province of Vercelli, the capital of excellent rice.

This company has a rich heritage of family involvement and high quality products, and can count on values, history and traditions dating back to 1833 at its marvellous headquarters: the Castello di Desana.

The family-run business oversees the entire supply chain of the product, guaranteeing the purity of the rice variety that it grows. This includes preparation of the land, harvesting, transformation in the rice mill with stone grinders and packaging, guaranteeing that each step of the process is checked.

The Rice Fields

Tenuta Castello Farm: the specialists in Organic Carnaroli rice

Rice is grown in the Tenuta Castello paddy fields which cover about 120 hectares.

We check each step of the production process: from preparation of the ground to seeding, from harvesting to processing in the rice mill to ensure our customers get the best quality rice possible.

Our rice is produced in accordance with organic principles, with special attention to experimenting with innovative organic techniques, including the use of green mulching.

Breeding

Organic farming techniques to breed Piedmontese cattle.

Our cattle eat forage grown on our organic farm land and organic flour obtained as a by-product from processing the rice. Thanks to this, we have organic manure to fertilise our farmland.

Tenuta Castello always keeps the wellbeing of its animals in mind; the cattle have over a hectare available to them and spend every summer mountain grazing in the Valle d’Andorno, above the Biellese.

The Rice Mill

Stone rice mill, for an artisanal processing of our rice.

Every transition is managed internally at Tenuta Castello, and we are eager to show you this part too since it all takes place in our old stone rice mill! It can process the rice on a fully artisanal basis, which of course is not very cost-effective, but ensures higher quality and control of the rice.

In accordance with the natural character of the product and the environment, the rice is still processed using traditional methods with machines dating back to the early 1900s.

The Castle

The charming Castle is richly imbued with history and is the ideal location to hold banquets and ceremonies.

Our historic castle forms the beautiful backdrop to our everyday work lives. The Castle’s park is large and strategically lighted, and its open spaces provide a dreamlike setting and act as an enchanting backdrop.

Guided tours can also be arranged, or visitors can enjoy tastings organised by the staff.
